In the first semester of 2018, a family of five in Davao Oriental needed no less than PhP7,358, on average, to meet the family’s basic food needs for a month or PhP245 per day. This amount is the food threshold which is 10.5 percent or PhP699 higher than the PhP6,659 food threshold recorded in 2015. On the other hand, no less than PhP10,536, on average, was needed to meet both basic food and non-food needs of a family of five in a month or PhP351 per day. This amount is the poverty threshold. This poverty threshold is 10.9 percent or PhP1,032 higher than the poverty thresholds from the first semester of 20151 which was PhP9,504. Survey of Retail Prices of Commodities conducted by Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has generated a CPI of 124.0 as of May 2019, using 2012 as the base year. This means that for a typical Filipino household in Davao Oriental to afford same values of goods and services in May 2012 @ PhP100.00, needs an additional PhP24.00 in May 2019. The CPI in April 2019 was recorded at 122.7. During the same period in 2018, the CPI was at 122.1. The total number of constructions in the first quarter of 2019 reached 138, based on the preliminary results of construction statistics from approved building permits. This reflects an increase of 109.1 percent from the 66 constructions recorded during the same quarter of 2018. This implies that the cost of a basket of goods and services commonly purchased by a typical Filipino household in Davao Oriental was at an average of Php122.7 during the period. In line with its mandate to generate and disseminate statistics for government planning and program implementation, the Provincial Statistical Office of Davao Oriental presented some statistics on women and men during the Data Presentation on Gender Statistics of Davao Oriental on 25 March 2019 at Baywalk Hotel, City of Mati. The activity gathered various stakeholders from the national government agencies, local government units and the academe with the aim of appreciating the importance of gender statistics in achieving gender equality.
