Vital Statistics are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in the civil register.
Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and all such events that have something to do with an individual’s entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime. Recording of these events in the civil register is known as Vital or Civil Registration and the resulting documents are called Vital Records.

BIRTH STATISTICS
Birth is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which, after such separation, breaths or shows any other evidence of life.
An average of 20 babies are born in the province daily
The number of registered births in the province in 2014 had a total of 7,329

This figure is higher by 9.5 percent compared to the 6,692 births registered in 2013. This translates that on the average, there were 20 babies born daily. In the province, more than half (52.2 percent) of the babies born alive were males (3,824) compared to the 47.8 percent (3,505) of females. This resulted to a sex ratio of 109 male babies per 100 females.

The number of live births in the province generally showed an increasing trend in the last 9 years from 5,796 live births in 2006 to 7,329 in 2014. A substantial decline of registered birth occurrences was in 2010 with 6,404.

City of Mati, the province’s capital and lone city, recorded the most number of babies born alive at 3,650 in 2014. This comprised about 49.8 percent of the total births registered in the province. This was followed by the municipalities of Governor Generoso and Lupon with 695 and 630 births, respectively.

The municipality of Boston had the lowest registered births in 2014 with only 95.

A total of 471 babies are born outside the province to mothers with usual place of residence in Davao Oriental

In terms of live births by usual place of residence of the mother, a total of 7,800 live births were recorded in 2014. This means that there were 471 babies born outside the province to mothers with usual place of residence in Davao Oriental; higher by 7 live births from 464 live births recorded in 2013.

Majority of the live births are attended by health professionals

Around 78.5 percent or 6,123 of the 7,800 live births recorded were attended by medical professionals. Births attended by health professionals increased by 16.9 percent from the 5,236 figure in 2013. Of this number, 4,376 (71.5 percent) live births were medically attended by doctors or physicians; 1,507 (24.6 percent) live births were delivered by midwives; and, 240 (3.9 percent) live births were aided by nurses.

On the other hand, 21.4 percent of the live births were attended by traditional birth attendants, which include hilots or unlicensed midwives. The remaining numbers were attended by other attendants.

MARRIAGE STATISTICS
Marriage is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life.
An annual average of 2,429 marriages are registered in 2006-2014

A total of 2,549 marriages were registered in 2014. The number of registered marriages in Davao Oriental showed an erratic trend for the past 9 years. It is worth to note that there was a steady increase of registered marriages during the period 2006 to 2009. In 2010, the number of marriages dropped very significantly, registering a decrease of 17.5 percent from the 2,956 marriages in 2009. Then it increased to 2,715 in 2011. It continuously decreased during the years during 2012 to 2013 then increased to 2,549 in 2014. On the average, 2,429 marriages were registered annually in 2006 to 2014.

In 2014, marriages usually occurred in City of Mati with 970 marriages. It comprised about 38.1 percent of the total number of marriages in the province. It was followed by Governor Generoso with 237 marriages and Baganga with 206 marriages. Municipality of Boston had the lowest number of marriages registered with only 49 marriages.

More than half of the total marriages are solemnized under Roman Catholic rites

Of the total marriages registered in the province, more than half or 53.6 percent (1,365 marriages) were solemnized under Roman Catholic rites. This figure was followed by marriages solemnized through civil rites with 716 marriages or 28.1 percent. Another 31.2 percent (337 marriages) were solemnized through other religious rites. The remaining numbers (131 marriages) were solemnized under Muslim rites.

DEATH STATISTICS
Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place.
An average of 6 persons dies in the province daily

The number of registered deaths in the province reached 2,276 in 2014. This means that on the average, 6 persons died daily in the province during the period. The figure in 2014 is slightly lower by 6.3 percent compared to the figure in 2013 which recorded a total death of 2,429.

The number of registered deaths in Davao Oriental showed an erratic trend. In 2006, a total of 1,587 deaths were registered. It went down to 1,564 in 2007. From the figure in 2007, it showed a steady increase in 2008 to 2010. It then went down to 2,070 in 2011 from 2,073 in 2011. A substantial increase in death registration happened in 2012 when the figure suddenly raised to 2,705 deaths or an increase of 30.7 percent. This increase was contributed to the large number of deaths when Typhoon Pablo landed in the eastern coasts of the province. The registered deaths in these municipalities (Baganga, Cateel and Boston) almost doubled in 2012. From the figure in 2012, it steadily went down in 2013 to 2014.

In 2014, City of Mati registered the highest number of deaths at 793 deaths. This was followed by the municipalities of Lupon and Baganga at 294 and 224 deaths, respectively. Municipality of Boston had the lowest death registration at 28 deaths.

By usual place of residence, a total of 2,637 deaths were recorded. This means that there were 361 deaths which occurred outside the province to persons usually residing in Davao Oriental. Of the 2,637 deaths recorded, 67 deaths were infant deaths (below one year old). It is lower by 9.4 percent compared to the 74 infant deaths in 2013. Of these infant deaths, 55.2 percent (37 deaths) were male babies.
Three out of four deaths are not medically attended

Of the registered number of deaths in Davao Oriental in 2014, 74.6 percent (1,699 deaths) were not medically attended compared to the 25.4 percent (577 deaths) which were attended by medical professionals. This figure is lower by 7.4 percent compared to the 1,835 deaths which were not medically attended in 2013.
Fetal deaths decrease by 25.0 percent

Fetal death is death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy; the death is indicated by the fact that after such separation the fetus does not breath or show any evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscle.

A total of 18 fetal deaths were recorded in 2014. This figure is lower by 25.0 percent compared to the 24 fetal deaths reported in 2013. Twelve of these fetal deaths were recorded in the City of Mati. The remaining number were recorded in Lupon (5 fetal deaths) and Banaybanay (1 fetal deaths).

In terms of attendance, all of these fetal deaths were medically attended.
Maternal deaths in the province grow by 12.5 percent

Maternal mortality refers to the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.

In Davao Oriental, a total of 9 maternal deaths were registered. This translates to an increase of 12.5 percent from the 8 maternal deaths registered in 2013.

Five of these maternal deaths were not medically attended. The remaining number was medically attended by hospital authority (3 maternal deaths) and private physician (1 maternal death).
