Highlights of the Housing Characteristics of Davao Oriental

Occupied housing units in Davao Oriental reached 126,969

 

The number of occupied housing units in 2015 reached 126,969. This is an increase of 17,258 from the 109,711 in 2010 and an increase of 42,204 from the 84,765 in 2000.

Among political subdivisions, City of Mati, the province’s lone city and capital, had the highest number of occupied housing units at 31,853. This was followed by the municipality of Lupon with 15,210 occupied housing units and the municipality of Baganga with 13,259. The municipality of Boston had the least number of occupied housing units at 3,212.

 

There were 101 households per 100 occupied housing units

 

A total of 126,969 occupied housing units were recorded in the province of Davao Oriental in 2015. This translates to a ratio of 101 households for every 100 occupied housing units, with 4.4 persons per occupied housing unit. In 2010, there were 104 households per 100 occupied housing units, and 4.7 persons per occupied housing unit.

Nine in every ten households lived in single houses

 

In 2015, single houses made up 93.6 percent of the total occupied housing units in the province. About 4.1 percent were duplex type while 2.0 percent were multi-unit residential buildings or houses. By comparison, in 2010, single houses accounted for 96.8 percent of the total occupied housing units, 1.4 percent were duplex, and 1.1 percent were multi-unit residential buildings or houses.

Occupied housing units with outer walls and roofs made of light materials decreased

 

In 2015, 38.5 percent of occupied housing units in the province had outer walls made of bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa, down from 45.5 percent in 2010. The proportion of occupied housing units made of wood decreased from 26.4 percent in 2010 to 24.9 percent in 2015. On the other hand, those with walls made of concrete/brick/stone increased from 14.2 percent in 2010 to 20.1 percent in 2015.

Meanwhile, about 68.5 percent of the occupied housing units in 2015 had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum. This is higher than the proportion recorded in 2010 at 50.8 percent. Additionally, the number of occupied housing units with roofs made of bamboo/cogon/nipa/anahaw decreased to 33,579 in 2015 from 48,437 in 2010.

Most households lived in housing units and lots they owned or in owner like possession

 

Of the 128,558 number of households in 2015, 45.0 percent lived in a housing unit and lot they owned or in owner-like possession. Moreover, 36.5 percent of the households lived in a housing unit they owned and on a rent-free lot with consent of the owner. Renters of both housing unit and lot accounted for about 3.1 percent in 2015.

Seven in every ten households used electricity for lighting

 

In 2015, 74.5 percent of the total number of households used electricity for lighting while 19.6 percent used kerosene or gaas. The number of households using solar panels and solar lamps accounted for about 1.3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. There were 138 households which reported no fuel for lighting.

Almost forty percent of households drew water for drinking from community water system

 

Of the total number of households in 2015, 39.0 percent drew water for drinking from community water system (both from own use faucet and from a faucet shared with other households). This was followed by households that used water from tubed/piped deep well (23.5 percent shared and 4.9 percent own use).

Four in every ten households used water from community water system for cooking

 

In terms of water supply for cooking, 46.2 percent of the total number of households in 2015 used water from community water system (both from own use faucet and from a faucet shared with other households). This was followed by households that used water from tubed/piped deep well (23.9 percent shared and 6.0 percent own use).

  • Housing unit is a structure or the part of a structure or the space that is used as a home, residence, or sleeping place by one person or more people who maintain a common household.

  • Occupied housing units are housing units that are occupied by a household.

  • The POPCEN 2015 was undertaken by the Philippine Statistics Authority in August 2015 pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order No. 352 – Designation of Statistical Activities That Will Generate Critical Data for Decision-Making of the Government and the Private Sector, which stipulates the conduct of a mid-decade census primarily to update the population count in all barangays nationwide.

  • Information on the count of the population were collected with 12:01 a.m. of August 1, 2015 as the census reference time and date.
